Uttar Pradesh is a state in northern India, with Lucknow as its capital. Spanning much of the fertile Gangetic plain, it is India’s most populous state and is known for its historic cities, pilgrimage centres, agricultural production and influence on national politics.
Hindi and Urdu shape its public and cultural life, alongside regional languages such as Awadhi and Bhojpuri. Traditions include classical music, Kathak dance, literature, crafts and varied cuisines. Farming, manufacturing, trade and services support the economy, with industrial centres including Kanpur and Noida. Major landmarks include the Taj Mahal in Agra, Varanasi’s riverfront ghats and important religious sites in Ayodhya, Mathura and Prayagraj.
Residents commonly care about employment, education, healthcare, public safety and reliable electricity and water. Other civic priorities include farm incomes, irrigation, road quality, sanitation, air pollution and river health. Rapid urban growth also raises questions about housing, transport, waste management and access to public services.
