Mathura (मथुरा) is a district in western Uttar Pradesh, India, centred on the city of Mathura along the Yamuna River. Part of the Braj region, it is especially known for its association with Lord Krishna. Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan and other pilgrimage centres attract visitors throughout the year, particularly during Janmashtami and Holi.
Braj traditions shape local language, music, temple worship and festivals. Hindi and Braj Bhasha are widely spoken. Agriculture, pilgrimage tourism, trade, dairy products and industry support the district’s economy. Notable landmarks include the Shri Krishna Janmasthan complex, Dwarkadhish Temple, Vrindavan’s temples and Govardhan Hill. Mathura is also known for its ancient sculptural heritage and archaeological museum collections.
Common civic concerns include Yamuna pollution, sewage treatment, drinking water, waste collection and road maintenance. Heavy pilgrimage traffic makes crowd management, parking and pedestrian safety important. Residents also have a stake in heritage conservation, reliable public services and balancing tourism development with everyday neighbourhood needs.
