Mau (मऊ) is a district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters in Mau city, also known as Maunath Bhanjan. The district is especially known for weaving and textile production, including saris. Its towns and villages form part of the densely settled agricultural landscape of the middle Gangetic plain.
Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely spoken, while Urdu also has a place in local cultural life. Hindu and Muslim communities contribute to the district’s festivals, markets and craft traditions. Handloom and powerloom weaving, trade, farming and small businesses support livelihoods. Ghosi and Muhammadabad Gohna are important towns, while the wider district has temples, mosques and historic settlements associated with its regional heritage.
Common civic concerns include reliable electricity for homes and weaving units, better roads, drainage and sanitation. Residents also care about access to healthcare and education, employment opportunities, support for textile workers, and flood management in areas near the Ghaghara River.
