Shamli (शामली), also spelled Shamali, is a district in western Uttar Pradesh, India. Created from Muzaffarnagar district in 2011, it was initially named Prabuddh Nagar. Its headquarters is Shamli town. Bordering Haryana across the Yamuna, the district is known for sugarcane cultivation, sugar mills and agricultural trade.
People live in market towns and farming villages, with Hindi and local western Uttar Pradesh speech varieties commonly heard. Rural traditions, religious festivals and weekly markets shape community life. Farming, sugar processing, small businesses and transport support the economy. Shamli, Kairana and Kandhla are important urban centres; places of worship and older market areas are familiar local landmarks.
Common civic concerns include timely sugarcane payments, farm prices, irrigation and reliable electricity. Residents also care about road maintenance, drainage, sanitation, healthcare and education. Employment opportunities for young people, public transport, community harmony and flood preparedness in Yamuna-side areas are important district-level issues.
