Jalaun (जालौन) is a district in southwestern Uttar Pradesh, in the Bundelkhand region of India. Its administrative headquarters is Orai, rather than the town of Jalaun. The district is known for its agricultural landscape, historic settlements and connections to the Yamuna river system.
Hindi and Bundeli shape everyday speech and local culture, alongside fairs, religious festivals and regional traditions. Farming, agricultural trade, small businesses and public services support livelihoods, with wheat, pulses and oilseeds among the crops grown. Kalpi, on the Yamuna, is an important historic town associated with the events of 1857. Orai serves as a centre for administration, commerce, education and transport.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, drinking-water supplies and resilience to drought and seasonal flooding. Residents also care about road maintenance, sanitation, healthcare, school quality and employment opportunities for young people. Improving farm incomes and access to services across villages and towns remains important to the district’s development.
