Shravasti (श्रावस्ती) is a district in northeastern Uttar Pradesh, India, bordering Nepal. Its administrative headquarters is Bhinga. The district is best known for ancient Shravasti, an important centre of Buddhism where Gautama Buddha spent many rainy-season retreats. Its archaeological and religious sites draw pilgrims and visitors from India and abroad.
Agriculture supports much of the local economy, alongside small businesses, trade and services. Hindi and Awadhi are widely spoken, and village life reflects the festivals and traditions of the region’s communities. Major landmarks include the Buddhist remains at Sahet-Mahet and Jetavana monastery. The area also holds significance for Jain pilgrims, adding to its religious heritage.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, irrigation, flood preparedness, drinking water and sanitation. Residents also need accessible healthcare, stronger schools and local employment opportunities. Heritage conservation, visitor facilities and tourism-linked livelihoods are important considerations, alongside ensuring that development benefits rural communities across the district.
