Kaushambi (कौशाम्बी) is a district in southern Uttar Pradesh, India, west of Prayagraj. Its administrative headquarters is Manjhanpur. The district takes its name from ancient Kaushambi, an important city associated with the Vatsa kingdom and early Buddhism. Archaeological remains near present-day Kosam connect the area with this long history.
Most residents live in rural communities, where farming, agricultural labour and small businesses support livelihoods. Hindi and local speech varieties shape everyday life, while festivals, markets and religious gatherings bring communities together. Important heritage and pilgrimage sites include the ruins of ancient Kaushambi and the Sheetla Devi temple at Kada. Buddhist associations also draw visitors interested in the region’s past.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, drinking water, road maintenance, sanitation and access to healthcare and schools. Residents also care about farm incomes, local employment and dependable electricity. Protecting archaeological sites while improving visitor facilities is another consideration for the district’s development.
