Bhadohi (भदोही) is a district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, near Varanasi. Its district headquarters is at Gyanpur, while Bhadohi town is a major commercial centre. The district is best known for its handmade carpet industry, which connects local weaving communities with buyers across India and overseas.
Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely spoken, and everyday life reflects the region’s Hindu and Muslim cultural traditions. Carpet weaving, dyeing, finishing and trading support many livelihoods, alongside agriculture, retail and other services. Skilled artisans and small enterprises are central to the local economy. Religious destinations include Sita Samahit Sthal at Sitamarhi, associated with traditions surrounding Sita, and the Ganges riverfront.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, drainage, sanitation, drinking water and reliable electricity. Residents also care about schools, healthcare and employment opportunities. For carpet-producing communities, fair wages, worker welfare, skills training and access to markets are important, alongside managing industrial wastewater and protecting local water resources.
