Maharajganj (महाराजगंज) is a district in northeastern Uttar Pradesh, India, along the border with Nepal. Its administrative headquarters is Maharajganj town. Part of the Gorakhpur division, the district is known for its fertile plains, agriculture, forest areas and cross-border connections through Sonauli.
Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely spoken, and village life, local markets and religious festivals shape its culture. Farming, particularly rice, wheat and sugarcane cultivation, supports much of the economy, alongside trade, transport and small businesses. Sonauli is an important gateway for travel and commerce with Nepal. Sohagi Barwa Wildlife Sanctuary is a notable natural landmark, protecting forests and wildlife near the international border.
Common civic concerns include rural roads, drainage, seasonal flooding, irrigation and fair access to agricultural markets. Residents also care about reliable electricity, drinking water, sanitation, healthcare and schools. Employment opportunities, border-area infrastructure and balancing forest conservation with local livelihoods are other important public issues.
