Jhansi (झाँसी) is a district in southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India, bordering Madhya Pradesh in the Bundelkhand region. Its administrative headquarters is Jhansi city. The district is closely associated with Rani Lakshmibai and the uprising of 1857, and is known for its forts, historic settlements and rocky landscape.
Hindi and Bundeli are widely spoken, and Bundelkhand’s traditions shape local festivals, food and folk culture. Farming, trade, public services and railway-related employment support the economy. Jhansi city is an important rail junction. Prominent landmarks include Jhansi Fort and Rani Mahal, while historic sites elsewhere in the district add to its cultural heritage.
Residents commonly care about reliable drinking water, irrigation and drought resilience in a region affected by variable rainfall. Other civic priorities include farm incomes, employment opportunities, healthcare, education, road maintenance and sanitation. Managing urban growth while protecting heritage buildings and improving services in rural communities are also important concerns.
