Jharkhand is a state in eastern India, with Ranchi as its capital. Created from southern Bihar in 2000, it is known for mineral resources, forests, waterfalls and the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Coal mining, steelmaking and other industries give it an important role in India’s economy.
The state is home to diverse communities, including Adivasi peoples such as the Santhal, Munda, Oraon and Ho. Languages, festivals, music and dance reflect this diversity, with Sarhul and Karma among prominent celebrations. Agriculture supports many rural households, alongside mining and manufacturing. Jamshedpur is a major industrial centre, while notable destinations include Betla National Park, Hundru Falls and the Baidyanath temple at Deoghar.
Common civic concerns include employment, education, healthcare, reliable water supplies and road connectivity. Residents also debate land and forest rights, displacement linked to development, mining pollution and access to public services. Balancing industrial growth with environmental protection and community livelihoods remains a central challenge.
