West Singhbhum (पश्चिमी सिंहभूम) is a district in southern Jharkhand, India, with its administrative headquarters at Chaibasa. It is known for forested hills, rich iron ore deposits and the Saranda forest landscape. The district borders Odisha and forms part of the historic Singhbhum region.
Adivasi communities, particularly the Ho, are central to the district’s identity. Ho, Hindi and other regional languages are spoken, while community festivals, music and dance sustain local cultural traditions. Farming, forest-based livelihoods, mining and related activities support the economy. Chaibasa is an important administrative and trading centre, while Saranda’s sal forests are a defining natural landmark.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, drinking water, healthcare and access to schools in remote settlements. Residents also care about employment, land and forest rights, and the environmental effects of mining. Balancing industrial activity with forest conservation and community livelihoods remains an important public issue.
