Bokaro (बोकारो) is a district in Jharkhand, eastern India, known for its steel industry and coalfields. Its headquarters is Bokaro Steel City, a planned industrial centre built around the Bokaro Steel Plant. The Damodar River and its tributaries shape the district’s landscape and support industrial and agricultural activity.
The district includes industrial townships, mining settlements and rural communities. Hindi, Khortha and other regional languages reflect its diverse population. Sarhul, Karma, Chhath and Durga Puja are among the festivals celebrated here. Steelmaking, coal mining, power generation, trade and farming support livelihoods. Recognisable places include Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park, Tenughat Dam and the Lugu Buru area, which holds religious significance for Santhal communities.
Common civic concerns include air and water pollution, reliable drinking water, road maintenance, sanitation and healthcare access. Residents also care about employment, education, worker safety, displacement linked to industrial development, and ensuring that rural areas share in infrastructure and public services.
