Seraikela-Kharsawan (सरायकेला खरसावां) is a district in southeastern Jharkhand, India, with its headquarters at Seraikela. Near Jamshedpur, it combines industrial centres with villages, farmland and wooded hills. The district is especially known for Seraikela Chhau, a masked dance tradition with roots in royal patronage.
Adivasi communities and other local populations contribute to its multilingual culture, festivals and craft traditions. Agriculture supports rural livelihoods, while the Adityapur industrial area is a major centre for manufacturing and engineering businesses linked to the wider Jamshedpur economy. Seraikela’s royal heritage, Chhau masks and performances, and Chandil Dam are notable cultural and visitor attractions.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, sanitation, healthcare and access to good schools. Residents also have a stake in industrial employment, skills training and pollution control. In rural areas, irrigation, land rights, forest resources and transport connections are important, alongside balancing industrial growth with environmental protection and community needs.
