East Singhbhum (पूर्वी सिंहभूम) is a district in southeastern Jharkhand, bordering Odisha and West Bengal. Its headquarters, Jamshedpur, is one of India’s best-known industrial cities, closely associated with Tata Steel. The district combines urban industrial areas with villages, forests and hills.
Tribal communities, including Santhals, Bhumij and Hos, contribute to its cultural life alongside people whose families came for industrial employment. Santali, Hindi, Bengali, Odia and other regional languages are spoken. Steelmaking, engineering, mining, trade and services support the economy, while agriculture remains important in rural areas. Notable places include Jubilee Park, Dimna Lake, the Dalma hills and wildlife sanctuary, and the riverside town of Ghatsila.
Common civic concerns include air and water pollution, reliable drinking water, sanitation, road maintenance and public transport. Residents also care about employment, access to healthcare and education, tribal land rights, and the effects of mining and industrial development. Forest conservation and human–elephant conflict matter in areas near wildlife habitats.
