Koderma (कोडरमा) is a district in northern Jharkhand, India, bordering Bihar. Its headquarters is Koderma town, while nearby Jhumri Telaiya is a major commercial centre. The district is known for its mica deposits and mining history, alongside wooded hills and the Tilaiya reservoir on the Barakar River.
Hindi and Khortha are widely spoken, and local life reflects the region’s varied communities, village traditions and seasonal festivals. Agriculture, trade, transport and mineral-related activities support livelihoods. Koderma Junction is an important railway connection. Tilaiya Dam, built as part of the Damodar Valley project, is a prominent landmark and a popular recreation spot.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, healthcare, school quality and employment opportunities. Mining-related environmental damage, worker safety and protection of children from hazardous labour are important issues in the wider mica-producing area. Residents also have a stake in forest conservation, waste management and access to public services in rural settlements.
