Khunti (खूंटी) is a district in southern Jharkhand, India, with its headquarters in Khunti town, south of Ranchi. Part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, it is known for its Adivasi heritage, wooded landscapes and association with freedom fighter Birsa Munda. The district was carved out of Ranchi district in 2007.
Munda communities are central to Khunti’s identity, alongside other tribal and non-tribal residents. Mundari, Hindi and regional languages are spoken, while Sarhul and Karam are important cultural celebrations. Farming, forest produce, lac cultivation and local trade support livelihoods. Ulihatu, Birsa Munda’s birthplace, is a significant heritage site; visitors also travel to Panchghagh Falls.
Common civic concerns include protection of tribal land rights, village participation in governance, reliable drinking water, irrigation and road connectivity. Residents also seek better schools, healthcare, employment and market access for farm and forest products. Forest conservation and public safety remain important alongside development that respects local communities and traditions.
