Giridih (गिरिडीह) is a district in northern Jharkhand, India, with its administrative headquarters in Giridih town. Part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, it is known for wooded hills, mineral resources and Parasnath Hill, also called Shikharji, one of Jainism’s most important pilgrimage sites.
The district’s communities include rural farming families, Adivasi communities, traders and industrial workers. Hindi, Khortha and other regional languages shape everyday life, alongside varied religious and seasonal traditions. Agriculture, coal mining, mica-related activity, small industries and commerce support livelihoods. Parasnath draws pilgrims from across India, while Khandoli’s reservoir and hills and the Usri Falls are well-known local attractions.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, electricity, healthcare and access to quality schools. Residents also care about employment, migration and the environmental and labour impacts of mining. Forest protection, sanitation, irrigation and managing pilgrimage-related traffic are important issues across the district’s towns and villages.
