Latehar (लातेहार) is a district in western Jharkhand, India, with its administrative headquarters in Latehar town. Part of the Palamu division, it is known for forested hills, river valleys and wildlife. Betla National Park, within the Palamau Tiger Reserve landscape, and the hill destination of Netarhat are prominent attractions.
The district has a substantial Adivasi population, including Oraon and other communities whose languages, festivals and traditions shape local life. Agriculture, forest-based livelihoods, mining, trade and public services contribute to its economy. Sarhul and Karma are among the festivals celebrated locally. The historic Palamu forts near Betla are important landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road connectivity, electricity, schools and accessible healthcare, especially in remote villages. Residents also care about employment, migration, land and forest rights, and access to welfare schemes. Balancing mining and tourism with conservation, alongside reducing human-wildlife conflict, remains important to the district’s future.
