Lohardaga (लोहरदगा) is a district in western Jharkhand, India, with its headquarters in Lohardaga town. Part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, it is known for bauxite deposits, forested hills and farming landscapes. Its rural settlements and district centre are connected economically and socially with nearby Ranchi.
The district has a substantial Adivasi population, including Oraon communities. Kurukh, Sadri and Hindi are among the languages spoken, while Sarhul and Karma are important cultural celebrations. Agriculture, bauxite mining, trade and public services support livelihoods. Rice cultivation is common in rural areas. Akhileshwar Dham and the hills around Peshrar are among its religious and scenic attractions.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road maintenance, healthcare and access to quality schools. Residents also have stakes in forest rights, land tenure and the environmental effects of mining. Employment opportunities, transport links and effective delivery of welfare services matter particularly to villages farther from the district headquarters.
