Gumla (गुमला) is a district in southwestern Jharkhand, India, with its administrative headquarters in Gumla town. Part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, it is known for its wooded hills, river valleys and strong Adivasi heritage. Its rural landscape includes farming settlements and forest-dependent communities.
Oraon, Munda and other Adivasi communities shape the district’s cultural life through languages, festivals, music and dance. Agriculture is central to livelihoods, alongside forest produce, small businesses and public services. Paddy is an important crop. Notable places include Anjan Dham, associated with traditions about Hanuman’s birthplace, and the historic temples at Tanginath. Christianity and indigenous religious traditions are also visible in local community life.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads and transport, drinking water, irrigation, healthcare and school access, particularly in remote villages. Residents also care about employment, migration, forest and land rights, and access to welfare schemes. Protecting natural resources while improving basic services remains an important development priority.
