Chatra (चतरा) is a district in northwestern Jharkhand, India, bordering Bihar. Its administrative headquarters is Chatra town. Part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau region, the district is known for its wooded hills, rural landscapes, religious sites and coal-bearing areas.
Hindi and regional languages are spoken across communities with varied social and cultural traditions. Agriculture supports many households, while coal mining, small businesses and public services also contribute to livelihoods. Important landmarks include the Maa Bhadrakali temple at Itkhori and the Kauleshwari hill temple near Hunterganj. Festivals, pilgrimage gatherings and local markets are important parts of community life.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, drinking water, electricity, healthcare and school facilities, particularly in remote villages. Residents also care about employment, irrigation and access to government services. Mining-related land use, compensation, pollution and forest protection are significant issues, alongside public safety and ensuring that development benefits reach rural and underserved communities.
