Assam is a state in northeastern India, shaped by the Brahmaputra and Barak river valleys. Its capital is Dispur, part of Guwahati, the state’s largest city. Assam is known for tea, rich biodiversity, silk weaving and Kaziranga National Park, a major habitat of the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
The state is home to diverse linguistic, ethnic and religious communities. Assamese and Bengali are widely spoken, alongside Bodo and other languages. Bihu celebrations, music, dance and weaving are important cultural expressions. Tea cultivation, agriculture, petroleum, trade and tourism support the economy. Notable landmarks include Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple, Majuli’s Vaishnavite monasteries and the Ahom-era monuments around Sivasagar.
Common civic concerns include recurring floods, riverbank erosion, reliable roads, healthcare, education and employment. Residents also debate migration, citizenship, land rights and the protection of local languages and identities. Wildlife conservation, human-elephant conflict and balancing development with environmental protection remain significant public issues.
