Hailakandi (হাইলাকান্দি) is a district in southern Assam, India, in the Barak Valley. Its administrative headquarters is Hailakandi town. Bordering Mizoram, the district is known for its tea gardens, agricultural landscapes and connections to the wider Bengali-speaking Barak Valley.
Bengali is widely spoken, alongside other languages reflecting the district’s diverse communities. Hindu and Muslim traditions, local festivals and regional food shape everyday cultural life. Farming, tea production, small businesses and public services support the economy. Rice cultivation is important, while markets link rural producers with nearby towns. Tea estates, places of worship and the Katakhal and Dhaleswari rivers are notable features of the district’s landscape.
Common civic concerns include flooding and drainage, road maintenance, reliable drinking water, healthcare and access to quality education. Residents also care about employment opportunities, tea workers’ welfare and better transport connections. Riverbank erosion, agricultural support and maintaining harmony among communities are important issues for local development and public discussion.
