Charaideo (চৰাইদেউ) is a district in eastern Assam, India, with its administrative headquarters at Sonari. It is known for its deep connections to the Ahom kingdom and the historic royal burial landscape at Charaideo. The district takes its name from the site associated with the kingdom’s first capital.
Assamese cultural traditions, Tai-Ahom heritage and the diverse communities of Assam’s tea-growing belt shape local life. Tea cultivation, farming, small businesses and public services support the economy. Bihu is widely celebrated. The Charaideo Moidams, burial mounds of Ahom royalty, are its best-known landmark; the royal burial site was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2024.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, drainage and flood preparedness, safe drinking water, healthcare and access to education. Tea-garden communities’ welfare and employment opportunities also matter. Protecting the moidams while improving visitor facilities and ensuring that tourism benefits nearby communities is another important local priority.
