Dhemaji (ধেমাজি) is a district in northeastern Assam, India, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, near the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. Its headquarters is Dhemaji town. The district is known for its riverine landscapes, fertile agricultural land and recurring floods, which shape livelihoods and daily life.
The population includes Assamese-speaking communities, Mising and other Indigenous groups, with varied languages and cultural traditions. Bihu and Mising festivals such as Ali-Aye-Ligang reflect the importance of farming and community life. Rice cultivation, fishing, weaving, small businesses and public services support the economy. Gerukamukh, near the Arunachal Pradesh border, is associated with the Subansiri River and a major hydropower project.
Residents commonly focus on flood protection, riverbank erosion, reliable roads and access to healthcare and education. Agricultural support, employment opportunities and safe drinking water are also important. Discussions around hydropower development include downstream safety, environmental impacts and the interests of river-dependent communities.
