Dima Hasao (ডিমা হাছাও) is a hill district in southern Assam, India, with its headquarters at Haflong. Formerly known as North Cachar Hills, it is known for forested slopes, valleys and scenic railway routes. Haflong is Assam’s best-known hill station, while Jatinga is noted for its unusual seasonal bird behaviour.
The district is home to Dimasa, Zeme Naga, Hmar, Kuki and other communities, with diverse languages, festivals and traditions. Agriculture, horticulture, trade, public services and tourism support local livelihoods. Haflong Lake, Maibang’s historical remains and the landscapes around Umrangso are notable attractions. The North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council plays an important role in local governance.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, reliable transport, drinking water, healthcare and access to schools in remote settlements. Landslides and heavy monsoon rain can disrupt connections. Residents also have a stake in employment, land and forest rights, cultural preservation, and balancing tourism and infrastructure development with environmental protection.
