Kamrup Metropolitan (কামৰূপ মহানগৰ) is a district in Assam, northeastern India, centred on Guwahati along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. It includes Dispur, Assam’s capital, and is known as a major gateway to the Northeast, with important transport links, commercial activity and educational institutions.
The district brings together Assamese-speaking communities and people from across the region. Bihu celebrations, weaving traditions, markets and varied food cultures shape local life. Trade, government services, education, healthcare and tourism support the economy. Prominent landmarks include Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, Umananda Temple on a river island, and the Assam State Museum.
Residents commonly focus on urban flooding, drainage, traffic congestion, reliable public transport and waste management. Protecting wetlands and hills while accommodating construction is another important concern. Clean drinking water, accessible healthcare, affordable housing and pedestrian safety also feature in civic discussions, alongside efforts to improve neighbourhood services and resilience to seasonal heavy rainfall.
