Nagaon (নগাঁও) is a district in central Assam, India, in the Brahmaputra Valley. Its administrative headquarters is Nagaon town, an important commercial and transport centre. The district is known for its agricultural landscape and its association with Assamese Vaishnavite religious and cultural traditions.
Residents come from varied linguistic and religious communities, with Assamese widely spoken. Farming, trade, services and small enterprises support the economy; rice is an important crop. Bihu and other religious and community festivals shape local life. Bordowa, also known as Batadrava, is revered as the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, the Assamese saint and social reformer, and is a major cultural landmark.
Common civic concerns include seasonal flooding, riverbank erosion, drainage and road maintenance. Residents also care about reliable drinking water, healthcare, education and employment opportunities for young people. Support for farmers, better market access, waste management and the protection of wetlands and cultural sites are important local priorities.
