West Karbi Anglong (পশ্চিম কাৰ্বি আংলং) is a hill district in Assam, India, with its headquarters at Hamren. Created from Karbi Anglong district in 2016, it is known for forested hills, river valleys and the cultural heritage of the Karbi people. It falls within the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council’s administrative area.
Karbi communities are central to local life, alongside other communities with distinct languages and traditions. Farming, horticulture, weaving, small businesses and forest-linked livelihoods support the economy. Karbi festivals, music and dance remain important expressions of identity. Hamren is an administrative and trading centre, while the Amreng area and the landscapes around the Kopili River are notable local attractions.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, access to healthcare and schools, drinking water, electricity and mobile connectivity across scattered settlements. Residents also care about land rights, forest protection, livelihood opportunities and responsive autonomous governance. Balancing infrastructure development with environmental safeguards is an important district-wide challenge.
