Golaghat (গোলাঘাট) is a district in Assam, India, on the southern side of the Brahmaputra Valley, bordering Nagaland. Its headquarters is Golaghat town. The district is known for tea gardens, agriculture and its association with Kaziranga National Park, which extends across district boundaries and is famous for the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
Assamese is widely spoken, alongside languages used by the district’s diverse communities. Bihu celebrations, weaving traditions and the cultural life of tea-garden communities contribute to its identity. Tea cultivation and processing, rice farming, trade and tourism support livelihoods. Numaligarh’s refinery is an important industrial presence, while Kaziranga and the historic Negheriting Shiva temple are prominent landmarks.
Common civic concerns include flood preparedness, erosion, road maintenance, drinking water and access to healthcare and education. Residents also have stakes in tea-worker welfare, employment and reliable public services. Conservation, human-wildlife conflict and balancing industrial growth with environmental protection are significant local issues.
