Lakhimpur (লখিমপুৰ) is a district in northeastern Assam, India, on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. Its administrative headquarters is North Lakhimpur. The district is known for its agricultural landscape, rivers and proximity to the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The Subansiri is an important river shaping local livelihoods and geography.
The population includes Assamese-speaking communities, Mising people and other groups, with varied languages and cultural traditions. Bihu and community festivals are central to social life. Rice farming, weaving, livestock rearing, trade and services support the economy. North Lakhimpur is a centre for education, healthcare and commerce, while Dhakuakhana is associated with Mising cultural traditions, including Ali-Aye-Ligang.
Flooding, riverbank erosion and the maintenance of embankments are recurring civic concerns. Residents also care about dependable roads, rural transport, drinking water, healthcare and schools. Agricultural support, employment opportunities and balancing river development with environmental protection are important issues across the district.
