Kokrajhar (কোকৰাঝাৰ) is a district in western Assam, India, bordering Bhutan to the north and West Bengal to the west. It forms part of the Bodoland Territorial Region, whose administrative headquarters are in Kokrajhar town. The district is known for its Bodo cultural heritage, forests and importance in the region’s political life.
Bodo, Assamese, Bengali, Adivasi and other communities contribute to its multilingual character. Bwisagu celebrations, traditional weaving, music and dance are prominent cultural features. Agriculture, small trade, public services and forest-linked livelihoods support the economy. Notable places include Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, known for golden langurs, and Bodoland University, an important centre for higher education.
Common civic concerns include road connectivity, reliable water and electricity, healthcare access and school facilities, especially in rural areas. Residents also care about employment opportunities, land rights, flood and erosion risks, and wildlife conservation. Inclusive development, accountable local administration and peaceful relations among communities remain important public priorities.
