Biswanath (বিশ্বনাথ) is a district in northern Assam, India, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. Its headquarters is Biswanath Chariali, an important local commercial centre. The district is known for tea gardens, agricultural landscapes and Biswanath Ghat, a riverside pilgrimage site associated with Shiva worship and often called “Gupta Kashi.”
The population includes Assamese-speaking communities, indigenous groups, tea-garden communities and people with other linguistic backgrounds. Bihu, religious festivals and community traditions shape cultural life. Tea cultivation, farming, small businesses and services support the economy. Biswanath Ghat’s temples and riverfront are notable landmarks, while markets in Biswanath Chariali connect surrounding villages with trade and services.
Common civic concerns include flooding and riverbank erosion, road maintenance, safe drinking water, healthcare and access to education. Residents also care about agricultural livelihoods, tea workers’ welfare and employment opportunities for young people. Waste management, reliable public services and protection of natural habitats are other important local issues.
