Punjab is a state in northwestern India, bordering Pakistan and the Indian states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. Chandigarh, a union territory, serves as its capital and is shared with Haryana. Punjab is known for its fertile plains, wheat and rice cultivation, Sikh heritage and lively musical traditions.
Punjabi is the official language, and Sikhism and Hinduism shape much of the state’s religious life. Bhangra, giddha, Punjabi literature and food are central to its cultural identity. Agriculture, food processing, textiles, sports goods and manufacturing support the economy. Major landmarks include the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, alongside historic sites in Patiala and other cities.
Common civic concerns include groundwater depletion, agricultural sustainability, crop-residue burning and air pollution. Residents also discuss employment, migration, drug misuse, public health and education. Reliable infrastructure, better municipal services and opportunities for young people remain important priorities across rural and urban communities.
