Rupnagar (ਰੂਪਨਗਰ) is a district in eastern Punjab, India, adjoining Himachal Pradesh and the Shivalik foothills. Its headquarters, Rupnagar town, is also widely known as Ropar. The district is associated with the Sutlej River, archaeological remains of the Indus Valley civilisation, and important Sikh religious sites.
Punjabi is the main language, and farming, trade, industry and services support local livelihoods. Anandpur Sahib is a major centre of Sikh history and pilgrimage, especially during Hola Mohalla. Notable landmarks include Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum and Rupnagar’s archaeological museum. IIT Ropar adds to the district’s educational profile, while the Ropar Wetland is an important natural habitat.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, sanitation, road maintenance and access to healthcare and education. River pollution, flood preparedness, groundwater use and protection of wetlands also matter. Residents balance agricultural needs and employment opportunities with industrial development, pilgrimage-related traffic and conservation of the district’s heritage.
