Nawanshahr, officially named Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar, is a district in Punjab’s Doaba region, between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. Its administrative headquarters is Nawanshahr town. The district is closely associated with freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, whose ancestral village, Khatkar Kalan, is a major place of remembrance.
Punjabi is widely spoken, and everyday life reflects the region’s Sikh and Hindu traditions, village networks and overseas family connections. Agriculture, especially wheat and rice cultivation, supports much of the economy, alongside trade, services and small businesses. Nawanshahr, Banga and Balachaur are important urban centres. The Bhagat Singh memorial and museum at Khatkar Kalan are prominent landmarks, while religious sites and local fairs contribute to community life.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, drainage, reliable drinking water, sanitation and waste collection. Residents also care about public healthcare, school quality, youth employment and drug prevention. Groundwater conservation, agricultural sustainability and flood preparedness near the Sutlej are important district-level issues.
