Tarn Taran (ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ) is a district in Punjab, India, south of Amritsar and along the border with Pakistan. Its headquarters, Tarn Taran Sahib, is an important Sikh pilgrimage centre founded by Guru Arjan Dev. The district is known for its religious heritage, fertile agricultural land and borderland setting.
Punjabi is the main language, and Sikh traditions strongly shape local culture. Farming, particularly wheat and rice cultivation, supports much of the economy, alongside agricultural trade, small businesses and services. Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib in Tarn Taran Sahib, with its large sacred sarovar, is a prominent landmark. Khadur Sahib and Goindwal Sahib are other important centres of Sikh history within the district.
Common civic concerns include irrigation, groundwater depletion, farm incomes and crop-residue management. Residents also care about road maintenance, drainage, sanitation, healthcare and education. Youth employment, drug misuse and access to addiction treatment are important public issues, alongside the needs of border villages.
