Fatehgarh Sahib (ਫਤਿਹਗੜ੍ਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ) is a district in Punjab, India, near Chandigarh and adjoining the historic town of Sirhind. It is best known for its Sikh heritage, particularly the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh’s younger sons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh. Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib is a major pilgrimage centre.
Punjabi language and culture shape everyday life across its towns and villages. Farming, trade, education and industry support the local economy. Mandi Gobindgarh is an important steel and metalworking centre, while Sirhind has a rich architectural legacy. The district’s landmarks include Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup and the Rauza Sharif shrine. The annual Shaheedi Jor Mela draws large numbers of visitors.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, drainage, reliable water supplies and waste management. Industrial pollution, groundwater use, agricultural livelihoods and employment opportunities also matter locally. Residents and authorities balance heritage conservation with development, alongside managing traffic, sanitation and public services during major religious gatherings.
