Patiala (ਪਟਿਆਲਾ) is a district in southeastern Punjab, India, bordering Haryana. Its administrative headquarters is Patiala city, formerly the capital of a princely state. The district is known for its royal heritage, Punjabi cultural traditions and productive agricultural countryside.
Punjabi is the principal language, and Sikh and Hindu traditions shape community life alongside those of other communities. Farming, particularly wheat and rice cultivation, supports the rural economy, while trade, education, services and industry provide other livelihoods. Notable landmarks include Qila Mubarak, Sheesh Mahal and the Baradari Gardens. Punjabi University and the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports are important institutions. Patiala is also associated with the Patiala gharana of classical music, distinctive turbans and traditional clothing.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supplies, drainage, waste collection, road maintenance and traffic. Residents also care about groundwater depletion, agricultural sustainability, employment, public healthcare and education, flood preparedness, and protecting heritage buildings while accommodating urban growth.
