Puducherry is a Union Territory of India, rather than a state. It comprises four geographically separated districts: Puducherry and Karaikal near Tamil Nadu, Mahe on the coast of Kerala - Keralam, and Yanam near Andhra Pradesh. Its capital, Puducherry city, is known for its French colonial heritage, seaside promenade and spiritual institutions.
Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam reflect the territory’s regional diversity, alongside a continuing French cultural influence. Tourism, services, trade, agriculture, fisheries and manufacturing contribute to its economy. Prominent landmarks include the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the French Quarter and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Auroville, nearby in Tamil Nadu, also draws visitors to the wider area.
Common civic concerns include drinking water, drainage, waste management, road maintenance and coastal erosion. Residents also care about employment, public healthcare, education, fishing livelihoods and balancing tourism with heritage conservation. The territory’s dispersed geography makes equitable services across its districts an important issue.
