Yanam (யானம்) is a district of the Union Territory of Puducherry, India, geographically separated from its other districts. It lies near the Godavari delta, surrounded by Andhra Pradesh and close to the Bay of Bengal. Known for its riverside setting and former French colonial administration, Yanam combines Telugu regional traditions with a distinctive administrative history.
Telugu is the main local language, and community life reflects the festivals, food and customs of coastal Andhra. Fishing, trade, agriculture in surrounding areas, small businesses and public services contribute to livelihoods. The riverfront is a prominent public space, while temples, churches and surviving traces of French influence add to the town’s character.
Common civic concerns include drainage, sanitation, drinking water, roads and access to healthcare and education. Its low-lying coastal setting makes flood preparedness and cyclone resilience important. Residents also care about employment, support for fishing communities and coordination of services with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
