Karaikal (காரைக்கால்) is a coastal district of the Union Territory of Puducherry, India, geographically separated from Puducherry city and surrounded by Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal. Part of the Cauvery delta, it is known for its agricultural landscape, fishing communities, religious heritage and history as a French colonial enclave.
Tamil is the main language, and local culture shares strong ties with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Farming, fishing, trade, port activity and pilgrimage tourism support the economy. Notable landmarks include the Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple, associated with the revered Tamil Shaivite saint, and the Dharbaranyeswarar Temple at Thirunallar, especially known for its shrine to Saturn. Karaikal Beach is a popular public gathering place.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation supplies, drainage, road maintenance and waste management. Coastal erosion, cyclone preparedness, fishing livelihoods and agricultural resilience are also important, alongside access to healthcare, education, employment and effective public services.
