Siwan (सीवान) is a district in western Bihar, India, bordering Uttar Pradesh. Its administrative headquarters is Siwan town. Part of the historic Saran region, the district is known for its Bhojpuri-speaking communities, agricultural landscape and association with India’s first president, Dr Rajendra Prasad, who was born in Ziradei.
Village life, market towns and migration shape the district’s society and economy. Farming, small businesses, trade and remittances support many households. Bhojpuri language and traditions are prominent, while festivals such as Chhath, Holi and Eid bring communities together. Important heritage sites include Rajendra Prasad’s ancestral home at Ziradei and religious destinations such as the Mahendra Nath temple near Mehdar.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, drainage, reliable electricity, drinking water and sanitation. Residents also care about accessible healthcare, school quality, agricultural support and local employment opportunities. Flooding and waterlogging affect some areas, making resilient infrastructure and responsive public services important priorities.
