Sitamarhi (सीतामढ़ी) is a district in northern Bihar, India, bordering Nepal and forming part of the Mithila region. Its administrative headquarters is at Dumra, near Sitamarhi town. The district is best known for its association with Sita, whose birthplace is traditionally identified with this area, making it an important Hindu pilgrimage destination.
Maithili and Hindi are widely spoken, and local life reflects Mithila’s festivals, food and cultural traditions. Agriculture supports much of the economy, with rice, wheat and maize among the crops grown. Trade and services also provide livelihoods. Janaki Temple in Sitamarhi town and the pilgrimage site at Punaura Dham are prominent religious landmarks.
Recurring floods, particularly around the Bagmati and other rivers, are a major civic concern. Residents also care about drainage, reliable roads, healthcare, school quality and employment opportunities. Cross-border movement and trade with Nepal, agricultural support, and access to safe drinking water shape local development priorities.
