Sabarimala is a forested pilgrimage destination in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala - Keralam, India. Set in the Western Ghats within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, it is best known for the hilltop shrine of Lord Ayyappa. Rather than a typical residential village, its identity centres on the temple and the large seasonal movement of pilgrims.
Religious traditions shape local activity, especially during the Mandala–Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. Pilgrims traditionally observe a period of austerity before visiting. The Ayyappa temple, its sacred eighteen steps, and the Pamba River at the hill’s base are important landmarks. Pilgrimage-related trade, transport, accommodation and services support livelihoods in surrounding settlements.
Common civic concerns include crowd management, safe access, drinking water, sanitation and emergency medical care. Waste disposal and protection of forests, wildlife and the Pamba River are particularly important in this sensitive setting. Residents of nearby communities and pilgrims also have a stake in seasonal transport arrangements, disaster preparedness and the balance between pilgrimage infrastructure and conservation.
