Nalanda (नालंदा) is a district in Bihar, India, with its administrative headquarters at Bihar Sharif. It is best known for the remains of ancient Nalanda Mahavihara, a major centre of Buddhist learning and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby Rajgir adds to the district’s importance as a destination for pilgrimage, heritage and tourism.
Residents speak Hindi, Magahi and Urdu, among other languages. Agriculture supports much of the rural economy, alongside trade, services and tourism. Buddhist, Jain, Hindu and Muslim traditions shape its cultural landscape. Notable landmarks include the Nalanda ruins, Rajgir’s hills and religious sites, and Bihar Sharif’s historic shrines. The modern Nalanda University is located in Rajgir.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, drinking water, drainage, sanitation and road maintenance. Residents also care about schools, healthcare, local employment and public transport. Managing visitor traffic, protecting archaeological sites and balancing tourism development with everyday community needs are important local priorities.
