Madhubani (मधुबनी) is a district in northern Bihar, India, bordering Nepal and forming part of the Mithila region. Its administrative headquarters is Madhubani town. The district is best known for Madhubani, or Mithila, painting, a distinctive art tradition featuring intricate patterns, mythological themes and scenes of everyday life.
Maithili language and Mithila’s festivals, music and customs shape local culture. Agriculture supports much of the economy, alongside trade, services and traditional crafts. Women artists have played a central role in bringing Mithila painting to wider audiences. Notable places include Saurath, associated with traditional marriage gatherings, and the historic palace complex at Rajnagar.
Residents commonly focus on flood protection, drainage, reliable roads and transport, and access to quality healthcare and education. Agricultural livelihoods, irrigation and employment opportunities are important concerns, particularly where migration supports household incomes. Other civic priorities include safe drinking water, sanitation, and preserving local heritage while improving infrastructure and opportunities for artisans.
