Kozhikode (കോഴിക്കോട്) is a coastal district in northern Kerala - Keralam, India, with Kozhikode city as its administrative headquarters. Bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west and upland landscapes toward the east, it is known for its historic spice trade, maritime connections and role in the Malabar region.
Malayalam is the main language, and the district has diverse religious communities and strong literary, musical and culinary traditions. Trade, services, fishing, agriculture, education and healthcare support the economy. Kozhikode Beach, Kappad Beach and Beypore, known for traditional wooden shipbuilding, are notable places. The city’s recognition as a UNESCO City of Literature reflects its vibrant reading and publishing culture.
Common civic concerns include waste management, clean waterways, coastal erosion, flooding and reliable public transport. Residents also care about road safety, access to healthcare, employment opportunities and protecting heritage. Balancing urban growth with the needs of coastal settlements, rural communities and environmentally sensitive uplands remains important.
