Kollam (കൊല്ലം) is a district in southern Kerala - Keralam, India, stretching from the Arabian Sea coast to the Western Ghats. Its headquarters, Kollam city, is a historic port associated with maritime trade and the cashew industry. The district is known for Ashtamudi Lake, backwaters, beaches and forested uplands.
Malayalam is the main language, and diverse religious communities contribute to local festivals, food and cultural life. Cashew processing, fishing, coir production, agriculture, trade and services support livelihoods. Notable places include Thangassery Lighthouse, Munroe Island, Thenmala and the forests around Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. Coastal settlements, busy towns and inland farming communities give the district a varied character.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, waste management, road maintenance and public transport. Residents also care about coastal erosion, flooding, protection of lakes and wetlands, and access to healthcare. Employment security and working conditions in traditional industries, particularly cashew processing and fishing, remain important local issues.
